DGCINE highlights film boost

The Dominican Republic’s film industry will close a pretty good year in quantity terms. Of all 16 film premieres in 2015, four films exceeded 200,000 tickets in sales in local movie theaters.

The massive sales for films such as “Pa’l Campamento” by Roberto Angel Salcedo; Los Paracaidistas, by Archi López; Pue’to pa’mi by Iván Herrera, and the recently-premiered Tubérculo Gourmet, by Archie López, which already surpassed 100,000 tickets sold, have blessed Dominican movie theaters.

“16 films were produced, and there we go. It was thought we’d decrease in the amount of ticket sales with respects to last year. With the 20 films that opened in 2014, it was proven these were way too much. What I didn’t like from this year was that we asked all showcasers for no more than one film a month, until we made it to the last quarter, and then we got two per month, so we went back to the old habits. Oro y Polvo del Color de la Noche for example, did not have a good turn-around. After El Color de la Noche, and then Tubérculo Gourmet. The ideal is for one local film per month, which means the cast and crews have chance for a respite and better luck”, so said Ivette Marichal during the DGCine annual breakfast, headed by the Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez. During the meeting, Marichal valued the results achieved effective the enforcement of the Film Tax Law. “Within the tax incentive laws the country holds, the Film Law represents 0.02%, and I think that Tourism & Free Zones matches that…”, she said.

On his end, Antonio Gennari, CEO of Lantica Media, made a dissertation on the development of the film industry in the country, from 2011- 2015. In his presentation he made reference to the investment and amount of job opportunities this sector has produced within said time frame.
