Urban Caribbean: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Courtesy of Dominican Republic Tourism (Casas del XVI, Pat’e Palo).

Founded by the brother of Christopher Columbus, the Dominican Republic’s imperial-style capital is the oldest European settlement in the New World, and its deep Spanish heritage is still very much on display.

The city’s Zona Colonial brims with opulent relics from the era of conquistadors: churches, plazas, and mansions — some of which, like Casas del XVI (CasasDelXVI.com), have been lovingly transformed into luxurious hotels. Dip in and out of world-class landmarks, like the Bellapart Museum and Columbus Lighthouse; savor the range of Dominican cuisine — with its blend of Spanish, indigenous, and African flavors — at the popular Pat’e Palo (PatePalo.com); sit in the shadow of the Columbus family palace; and when the sun sets, take to the streets for bachata music and dancing, fueled by Spanish wine and local rum.

The Cozy Don Juan Beach Resort, Completely Refurbished

The 150-room Don Juan Beach Resort – in the beachfront community of Boca Chica, situated 40 minutes east of Santo Domingo – has been completely refurbished. The hotel owners have invested some US$2.5 million in this classic facility, which to date is Santo Domingo’s closest beachfront hotel. It is also conveniently located some 10 minutes east of Las Americas international airport.

Because of its recent remodeling process, this classic hotel is now a four-star facility.

Jose Luis Cabral, the president of the hotel company, explains that the remodeling process will reinforce “everything that makes us distinct and unique, such as the seafront views in most of our rooms, the Makey Marina, the beach and nearby keys, where we are now operating kayak tours.”

Mr. Cabral also explained that “these much-needed investments in the facility are being accompanied by complementary actions, such as the professionalization of our staff and improvement of all hotel services.”

The reconstruction program includes the hotel’s common areas, all 150 rooms, as well as the Coral Restaurant, the Gri-Gri Snack Bar & Restaurant featuring pastas and pizzas, and the swimming pool and terrace areas.

The hotel also has a new management team headed by the German national Alois Sicheneder, who brings much experience from his years at the Accor and Melia Group chain of hotels.
