The Horizon Docks in Sans Souchi Featuring 700 Passengers

Yesterday, for the first time ever in Sans Soucí, docked the Caribe Tropical Horizon, from the Croisieres de France-Pullmantur Cruise Line. Featuring some 700 passengers under the Homeport modality, which aims to increase the cruise tourist arrivals, and the expenditures these make upon docking in Dominican soil. As part of the inaugural act to welcome the 9-deck vessel, and 208mts in length, the capitan of the Caribe Tropical Horizon, Nicolaus Chapais, exchanged plaques, meeting marine protocol, with naval entrepreneur Alexander Schad, alongside Sans Soucí director, Jaime Castillo Jorge; and Deputy Tourism Minister, Fausto Fernández.

Sansoucí, is the cruise ship terminal of the Port of Santo Domingo and the most modern in the Caribbean. Located on the East bank of the city of Santo Domingo, and arrives the dockage of large-cpacity vessels. It operates under the Homeport modality, allowing change of passengers, migration and luggage handling.

During the activity, which featured the attendance of local and safety authorities, among them the Deputy Mayor, Jeanette Medina Luciano, in representation of the East Santo Domingo mayor, Juan De los Santos; Francisco J. Carreras of Schad & Co. and Orfila Salazar, cruise director of the Tourism Ministry, said that Pullmantur has been awarded for five years straight as the best cruise embarkation and that this represents a great accomplishment for Santo Domingo and the port of Sans Souci.

Jaime Castillo, cruise director for Sans Soucí, indicated that every Saturday, the Horizon will dock at the Dominican port, where a total surpassing 405,000 passengers will make port. Castillo indicated that over 70,000-80,000 passengers dock per year and he pointed out the advantages this represents to the City of Santo Domingo because of its good connections, and the relaunching of the Colonial City through the IDB-MITUR project.

Some 40,000 Tourists Expected to Dock with the “Croisier France” Cruise

It is expected in the next five months for some 40,000 tourists from Europe and Latin America, to dock through the Horizon ship, from the Croisier de France- Pullmantur line, which will dock every Saturday in Sans Soucí y will further tour La Romana, Sta. Lucia, Guadeloupe and Margarita.

The cruise ship features 1,828 passenger capacity, will do 19 layovers in Sansouci, under the HomePort or Mother Port modality.

The ship’s captain, Nicholas Chazapis explained that the vessel, all throughout its nine decks and 208mts in length, features all types of facilities to enterain and surprise its passengers. The ship features two restaurants, two bars, cafés, theater, casino, gym, swimming pool and duty-free shops, as well as a spa and beauty salon.

Chazapis manifested that the Croisier de France-Pullmantur has won the “best ship crew” award for five years straight. He confessed to feeling very happy to arrive in the DR and that it will be a pleasure to visit this destination for the next five months.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Fausto Fernández thanked the embarkation authorities for their timely visit, given that tourism in the D.R is at its peak moment, therefore requires further boosting of the sector.

The Sansouci Director, Jaime Castillo explained that this is a very important time for the country as well as Pullmantur. Castillo mentioned that the port projections are maintained at 70,000- 80,000 tourists per year. For every 100,000 that dock in the country, the added value to be accrued by the City is of USD$15 billion.

Deputy Minister for Tourism Fernández said that the dockage of the Horizon Cruise aims to increase Dominican tourism, which is at its peak moment since 30years. Fernández stated that the projections for this year are of about an increase by 10%, this meaning an expected closing of the 2014 season with 550,000-600,000 tourists. “and all those Dominicans have to celebrate it”.
