Mobile Payments are a Reality in the DR

Mobile Payments are a Reality in the DR

In the Dominican Republic, more people everyday choose to issue mobile payments. Some years ago, talks began on the possibility of issuing transactions via mobile phones. Today, this system, once a dream on Power Point, is a reality in many countries worldwide. According to recent reports by Gartner Consulting, in 2011, more than 160million persons used their mobile phone to issue transactions, and that total could escalate to 448 million by 2016.

What are the advantages to these services? Mobile transactions enable tasks, that otherwise, would generate losses in time and money, such as bill payments or transfers among users. Using this system, transactions can be done simply and practically; users can pay their bills or send money by just punching in a code in their mobile phone while walking around the street, wait to see a doctor or when held up in traffic jam.

Latin America is not behind on this trend. A recent study published by the GSM Association, the Intl. Association which comprises the main global manufacturer and mobile telephony service carriers, says Latin America is the third most important region in the volume world. In Latin America, the fact that some 577 million persons reside in this region is a fact to consider, this means that there is more mobile phone volume than zone inhabitants.

Though many mobile lines don’t necessarily mean a high adoption of mobile payments through these devices, or do they? According to the FC Business Intelligence, by 2014, mobile transactions in Latin America will translate to none less than USD$63M. In the DR, one of the companies successfully offering mobile payment facilities is tPago, which already features a clientele of 300 users nationwide, and is in process of expanding its operations to Guatemala, Colombia, El Salvador and Puerto Rico.

According to their CEO, Brian Paniagua, one of the vital characteristics tPago is known for, is that “100% of the population can use it”. To access the system a smartphone is not mandatory, and, the platform features advanced encryption services to ensure removal of all data from devices to guarantee transactional safety. “Ours is a product for everyone, not just youths” said the tPago executive, whom also explained that the system does not consume airtime from your phone line nor requires an internet connection to properly function, reason why it is also a cost-effective option. According to Paniagua, one of the pillars, so this type of service captures market share is education” It is essential to be able to explain to consumers that a safe, economic, and easy-to-use service exists, that will allow them to pay their bills on time or buy airtime minutes with just entering a code in their mobile”.
