Santo Domingo. Under the title “Allegory to Liberty”, the Dominican Government, via the Ministry of Culture, presented last night the largest mural nationwide, in honor of  the Dominican woman, represented by the Mirabal sisters. The gigantic painting by Dustin Munoz, which renders homage to Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal, symbolizes the sacrifice of women fighting for freedom, progress and the daily labour of cultural, economic, social and professional entrepreneurship.

Amid an emotional act, the Minister of Culture, José Rafael Lantigua, expressed his satisfaction in presenting the work via which homage is rendered to “The Butterflies”, as the heroines were identified, as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of their courageous act on May 30th, 1961. “This impressive mural, whose elaboration was developed by a formidable team of painters from Fine Arts, will be, effective immediately, the most important center of attraction of the most important street in the Capital, thus honouring the Mirabal sisters and their struggle for the Dominican liberties”, pointed out Lantigua. The ceremony was headed by the Mayor Roberto Salcedo, and the CEO of Banco del Progreso, Marl Silverman, in representation of VICINI, responsible for funding the work.

Integrity

“The colors which adorn this Obelisk as of today, illustrate the value of integrity of the Dominican woman, the respect, passion for a just Fatherland, and the entrepreneurial spirit of creating enterprises and spaces for freedom”, said Silverman. On behalf of the Mirabal family, Deputy Minou Tavárez Mirabal, daughter of Minerva, thanked the gesture and reflected that the assassination of her mother kept her from developing the intense professional and personal relationship with her, that today she holds with the people close to her. “The most important part would be perhaps to remember that this monument was built in 1944, to commemorate the centennial of the Dominican Republic, and which became a clear reference of homage to the dictatorship”, said Minou.
